A walled city at Yanshi (Yanshi Shangcheng) was founded in the early Bronze Age Erligang horizon (often dated to c. 1600–1400 BCE). Some scholarship (including the Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology Project) has proposed it as an early Shang capital candidate (e.g., “Western Bo”), illustrating how early Shang political centers may have shifted among multiple sites in the Yi–Luo/central Henan region.
The major walled urban center at Zhengzhou (Zhengzhou Shang City) emerged during the Erligang period and is widely considered a key middle-early Shang political focus. Many sources treat it as a leading candidate for an early/middle Shang capital in historical tradition (often linked to the names Bo and/or Ao, though identifications remain debated).
Later historical tradition includes a Shang capital called Ao (隞), frequently connected by modern scholarship to the Zhengzhou Erligang walled city (or its immediate region). This association is important in reconstructing Shang capital relocations because it links textual capital names to excavated urban centers.
The Xiaoshuangqiao site near Zhengzhou is dated to a short span in the mid–late 2nd millennium BCE and contains palace foundations and large-scale sacrificial features. Some scholars identify it with Ao, reflecting how Shang capitals may have involved not just one “city,” but shifting, functionally distinct centers within a broader regional landscape.
Archaeological chronology indicates Xiaoshuangqiao was abandoned after only a few decades of use. The site’s short life is consistent with the wider pattern—attested in texts and archaeology—of Shang political centers being reorganized, relocated, or replaced over time.
The large Huanbei walled city (north of the Huan River near modern Anyang) was founded around the mid-14th century BCE. Its scale and planning indicate a major Shang center in the Anyang region before the better-known move to Yin (Yinxu).
Huanbei appears to have been destroyed (including evidence consistent with burning) and abandoned shortly before the construction and florescence of Yinxu across the river. This transition marks a major relocation/reconfiguration of the Shang capital area within the Anyang region.
According to historical documentation corroborated by archaeology and oracle bone inscriptions, King Pan Geng moved the Shang capital to Yin, around the Xiaotun area of present-day Anyang, around 1300 BCE. This relocation is the best-attested Shang capital move and created the long-lasting Late Shang capital.
After the move, Yin (Yinxu) served as a durable capital through the reigns of multiple late Shang kings, becoming a core locus of royal ritual, administration, and craft production. This stability contrasts with earlier periods in which capitals were remembered as moving multiple times.
The Late Shang occupation at Yinxu produced extensive oracle-bone inscriptions, which provide primary evidence for the late Shang kings and confirm Yin’s role as the final Shang capital. This epigraphic record is central to connecting textual accounts of capital relocations with excavated sites.
The Shang dynasty fell when the Zhou defeated the Shang forces, traditionally dated to 1046 BCE. With the collapse of Shang rule, the royal capital at Yin ceased to function as the dynastic center, leaving the ruins later known as Yin Xu.
In 1899, scholars recognized that “dragon bones” sold for medicine carried ancient inscriptions—now understood as oracle-bone script. This discovery initiated the modern process of tracing the bone finds back to the Anyang area and linking the site to the late Shang capital.
Beginning in 1928, formal archaeological excavations at Anyang/Yinxu established the site as a major late Shang capital location and produced systematic evidence (architecture, tombs, bronzes, oracle bones) that transformed the study of Shang capital history and relocations.
