Radiocarbon dating of oracle-bone materials from the Wu Ding reign provides an absolute time window broadly consistent with a late-13th-century BCE start for the Anyang inscriptional tradition, strengthening the chronological placement of early Shang writing at Yinxu.
The earliest oracle-bone inscriptions that can be confidently assigned to a reigning king are associated with King Wu Ding and the Anyang/Yinxu corpus. These records show a mature, standardized divination-writing practice used by the royal household.
