Late Shang bronze ornament frequently juxtaposes the taotie with additional creatures—especially one-legged kui dragons and stylized birds—expanding the visual “bestiary” of ritual bronzes beyond the central mask motif.
The cicada becomes a popular decorative element on late Shang ritual bronzes (sometimes placed on blades or subsidiary panels), part of the period’s broader zoomorphic vocabulary alongside masks and dragons.
Fu Hao—consort of King Wu Ding and known from oracle bones—was buried with a rich set of bronzes and other objects, offering a tightly contextualized snapshot of late Shang iconography, including animal-form vessels and dense relief decor.

Geometric leiwen (square-spiral) backgrounds increasingly serve as dense ground texture behind zoomorphic relief, becoming one of the most recognizable Shang ornamental devices on ritual bronzes.
Zhengzhou’s walled Erligang-period urban center (often linked with early Shang political power) anchors large-scale bronze production; early vessel decoration tends toward relatively restrained bands and fillets compared with later Anyang exuberance.
During the early Shang Erligang horizon, bronze vessel ornament begins to feature thin-line designs centered on paired oval eyes—widely discussed as an early, simplified precursor to the later taotie mask.
Archaeologists led by Zheng Zhenxiang discovered and excavated Fu Hao’s tomb at Yinxu in 1976—notable as the only excavated intact Shang royal tomb—greatly refining the study of Shang bronze styles, motifs, and workshop practice through securely provenanced objects.
