After King Li’s exile, the Gonghe regency (a rare period without a reigning king) began. This late Western Zhou rupture forms important context for shifts in elite self-representation and the documentary value of dated bronze inscriptions used to refine Western Zhou chronology.

In 771 BCE, the Western Zhou ended after the capital region was overrun and the royal house relocated east, marking a major political break. Western Zhou inscribed bronzes became crucial historical evidence for reconstructing the earlier court, lineages, and events that preceded the collapse.
