A coalition including the Quanrong and allied states overran the Western Zhou capital region and killed King You. The collapse of royal control in the west set the stage for the Zhou court’s relocation and the long Eastern Zhou era of fragmented interstate politics.
King Ping shifted the royal capital east to Luoyi (Chengzhou/Wangcheng, near modern Luoyang), marking the conventional start of the Eastern Zhou. The move reflected the Zhou kings’ reduced resources and increasing reliance on powerful regional states for security.
The first major phase of the Eastern Zhou is conventionally dated from the establishment of the eastern capital (Luoyang area). During this era, Zhou authority became largely ceremonial as numerous states competed through shifting alliances, warfare, and hegemonic leadership.
Jin’s victory over Chu at Chengpu was a decisive Spring and Autumn engagement and helped confirm Duke Wen of Jin’s position among the leading powers. It exemplified the era’s interstate rivalry conducted under nominal Zhou legitimacy.
Chu defeated Jin at Bi, strengthening King Zhuang of Chu’s standing as a dominant power. The battle illustrates the continuing contest for leadership among major states despite the Zhou king’s weakened role.
Confucius (Kong Qiu) was born during the Spring and Autumn period. His later teachings on ethics, ritual, and governance became foundational for Confucian traditions that shaped Chinese political and social thought for centuries.
Confucius died in 479 BCE, near the end of the Spring and Autumn era. Later tradition positioned his work as a response to weakening norms and intensifying competition among states under the fading Zhou order.
The second major phase of the Eastern Zhou is conventionally dated to 475–221 BCE. It was marked by larger territorial states, more sustained warfare, and intensified administrative and military reforms aimed at survival and eventual supremacy.
Mozi (traditionally dated c. 470–c. 391 BCE) became associated with Mohism, a major rival to Confucian approaches during the ‘Hundred Schools of Thought.’ His attributed doctrines—such as impartial concern and opposition to aggressive warfare—reflect the era’s urgent debates about order and statecraft.
King Weilie of Zhou formally acknowledged the leaders of Han, Zhao, and Wei as marquesses, effectively confirming the breakup of the powerful Jin polity into three major states. This recognition is often treated as a political marker for the Warring States era’s new state system.
In 356 BCE, Shang Yang began a transformative set of reforms in Qin emphasizing codified law, standardized administration, and military-agricultural mobilization. These changes strengthened Qin’s state capacity and are widely seen as foundational to its later dominance.
Qi defeated Wei at Maling in 342 BCE in a celebrated campaign associated with strategist Sun Bin. The defeat significantly reduced Wei’s position among leading states, highlighting how tactical innovation and coalition politics could rapidly alter power balances.
From 262 to 260 BCE, Qin and Zhao fought the prolonged Changping campaign, ending in a major Qin victory. The battle’s scale and Zhao’s losses shifted strategic momentum strongly toward Qin in the final decades of the Eastern Zhou world.
Qin forces took Wangcheng and absorbed the West Zhou domain; King Nan (the last broadly recognized Zhou king) died in 256 BCE soon after submitting. The loss of the royal center ended remaining Zhou ritual-political authority in practice.
After King Nan’s death, a small remnant polity around Chengzhou persisted briefly under a local Zhou claimant (often identified as King Hui/Duke Wen of Eastern Zhou). Qin captured and executed him in 249 BCE, extinguishing the remaining Zhou claim to kingship.
