Mohism developed into an influential philosophical, social, and religious movement during the Warring States era, participating in the broader "Hundred Schools" intellectual ferment. Mohists argued for objective moral standards and advanced a consequentialist ethical outlook centered on promoting collective benefit and reducing harm.
Mozi (Mo Di) is traditionally dated to c.470–391 BCE, with his activity placed in the late Spring-and-Autumn to early Warring States transition. His teachings became the nucleus of Mohism, a movement that would become a major rival to Confucianism during the Eastern Zhou.
A defining Mohist doctrine is 兼愛 (jian’ai, often translated "impartial care"), which rejects partiality based on kinship or status and evaluates policies by their effects on the welfare of "all under heaven." This ethical stance underlies Mohist critiques of aggression, extravagance, and hereditary privilege.
Mohist political thought emphasizes 尚賢 (shangxian, "exalting the worthy"), advocating appointment by ability rather than heredity. This theme became part of Mohism’s broader reform program aimed at increasing social order and material welfare.
Mohist writings include a sustained condemnation of aggressive warfare (非攻, fei gong), framing conquest as morally wrong and socially wasteful. This anti-aggression stance helped define Mohism’s identity in an era of intensifying interstate conflict.
In the "Gong Shu" chapter of the Mozi, Mozi travels from Qi to Chu after hearing of siege preparations against Song. The episode illustrates Mohist self-presentation as anti-aggression advocates who combined moral persuasion with practical knowledge of defensive methods.
Mohist sources and later accounts describe organized Mohist groups assisting threatened states, arriving ahead of invasions to strengthen defenses and deter attackers. Whatever the historicity of individual anecdotes, Mohists were widely remembered for a defensive, not conquest-oriented, role.
The received Mozi is an anthology formed through accretion over centuries, beginning perhaps during or soon after Mozi’s lifetime and continuing into later periods. It preserves early doctrinal essays alongside later technical and dialectical materials.
A set of "dialectical" chapters—often called the Mohist Canons (Mo jing)—systematizes topics in knowledge, language, and reasoning, and includes discussions relevant to science and technique. These materials are generally treated as the work of later Mohists rather than Mozi himself.
Scholarly discussion of the transmitted Mohist corpus often treats its received form as roughly stabilized by about 300 BCE, while still reflecting disparate layers and origins. This helps explain why the Mozi preserves both early reformist doctrine and later analytic, technical inquiry.
After Qin’s unification (221 BCE), repression of rival teachings and shifting political conditions contributed to the Mohist movement’s loss of vitality. Mohism would not recover its former prominence as an organized school in the new imperial order.
In 213 BCE, the Qin court ordered a major burning of books (with exceptions for certain practical and officially sanctioned materials). Later tradition and modern scholarship debate the scope and details, but the episode became emblematic of Qin-era intellectual suppression.
Mohism gradually declined under the Han and is often described as having vanished as a distinct organized movement by the middle of the Western Han. Later Chinese thought largely bypassed Mohist work in logic and epistemology, even as some themes persisted indirectly.
