The aristocratic houses of Zhao, Han, and Wei began dismantling the powerful state of Jin; a key turning point was the Zhao clan’s seizure of Jin’s ruling duke, accelerating Jin’s fragmentation and setting conditions for the later Warring States order.
King Weilie of Zhou formally recognized Han, Zhao, and Wei as independent vassal states (the “Three Jins”), an act widely treated as a watershed marking the transition to the Warring States political landscape.

King Nan ascended the Zhou throne; by this time Zhou authority was largely ceremonial, but his long reign illustrates how the Zhou court persisted diplomatically amid increasingly dominant regional powers.
After fighting from 262–260 BCE, Qin’s victory at Changping devastated Zhao’s military capacity and consolidated Qin’s strategic predominance, making eventual Qin conquest of the rival states far more likely.
Zhao, aided by Wei and Chu, defeated Qin forces at Handan (259–257 BCE), temporarily checking Qin expansion despite Qin’s long-term advantage after Changping.
Qin forces defeated the Zhou court’s remaining western domain, deposed King Nan, and ended the Zhou dynasty’s effective central line—an important symbolic milestone in the collapse of the old feudal order.
After King Nan’s deposition, a rump Eastern Zhou regime persisted briefly; its last claimant (often identified as Duke Wen of Eastern Zhou / “King Hui of Zhou”) was captured by Qin, extinguishing remaining Zhou political structures.
Qin conquered the last rival states and unified China in 221 BCE; Ying Zheng assumed the title Qin Shi Huang, founding the Qin dynasty and ending the Warring States era of Eastern Zhou fragmentation.
