During a major southern expedition, Western Zhou forces suffered a catastrophic defeat; King Zhao reportedly died during the retreat (traditionally associated with drowning while crossing the Han River), ending the dynasty’s early expansionary momentum.
Political crisis culminated in the exile of King Li after upheaval remembered as the Compatriots Rebellion, setting up an interregnum/regency and underscoring tensions between the royal house and elites.

King Xuan succeeded the regency and attempted to rebuild royal power, including military activity against groups identified in sources as “Western Barbarians” (often linked with the Xianyun) and actions to reassert influence among vassal states.
King You elevated his favored consort Bao Si and replaced the original heir (Yijiu), creating a succession crisis that contributed to elite opposition and instability near the end of Western Zhou.
Forces associated with the state of Shen and allies including the Quanrong attacked the Zhou capital region (Haojing/Fenghao). King You was killed, and the sack of the capital is a conventional endpoint for the Western Zhou.
After 771 BCE, the Zhou court relocated its main seat to the Luoyang area (Luoyi/Chengzhou-Wangcheng region), marking the transition to the Eastern Zhou and a major reduction in direct royal control over regional lords.
