The Metropolitan Museum of Art discusses a “Head of a King, possibly Amenemhat IV,” dated ca. 1814–1805 B.C. (suggested), reflecting ongoing scholarly caution in assigning late-12th royal portraiture and the broader problem of distinguishing Amenemhat IV from late Amenemhat III and early 13th-dynasty styles.
Upon Amenemhat IV’s death and in the apparent absence of a surviving male heir, Sobekneferu (also rendered Neferusobek) took full royal titulary and ruled as king. Her accession highlights the late-12th-dynasty succession stress that became a turning point into the 13th Dynasty.
The Turin Canon gives Sobekneferu a reign of 3 years, 10 months, and 24 days, underlining how brief late-12th-dynasty rule became after Amenemhat III’s long tenure—an important quantitative signal of instability.
A graffito at the Nubian fortress of Kumma records the Nile inundation level in Sobekneferu’s Year 3, demonstrating that state administration (including frontier record-keeping) continued under her reign despite limited surviving documentation.
An inscription from Egypt’s Eastern Desert mentions “year 4” during Sobekneferu’s rule, indicating her reign extended beyond three years and supporting the Turin Canon’s approximately four-year total.
Material culture corroborates Sobekneferu’s kingship: the British Museum holds cylinder seal EA16581, inscribed with her names and titulary and linking her with Sobek (including an epithet naming Sobek “lord of Shedyt”). Architectural elements reused at Kom el-Akareb (Heracleopolis Magna area) preserve Sobekneferu’s names on stone pieces (e.g., architrave/columns), indicating royal building activity or restoration in a key provincial cult landscape—an important proxy for her efforts to project legitimacy.
Sobekneferu died without an heir, and her death is widely treated as the end of the 12th Dynasty—closing the Middle Kingdom’s most stable dynastic line and setting conditions for the more rapid turnover associated with the early 13th Dynasty.
