In regnal Year 8, Senusret III campaigned in Nubia; a Semna inscription commemorates punitive actions and victory claims, marking an early, well-attested phase of the Middle Kingdom push beyond the Second Cataract.
Before (or in connection with) early Nubian campaigning, Senusret III cut/cleared a canal through the First Cataract at Elephantine (Aswan area) to ease the passage of military and commercial shipping toward Nubia.
A further Nubian expedition is attested for regnal Year 10, part of a sequence of major campaigns used to consolidate Egypt’s control in Lower Nubia and tighten frontier management around the Second Cataract.
At Mirgissa (ancient Iken), a substantial fortress complex is associated mainly with Senusret III’s reign, reflecting the escalation of fixed military infrastructure for river control, trade regulation, and frontier defense in the Second Cataract zone.
A Semna boundary stela dated to regnal Year 16 proclaims the southern border and restricts Nubian passage northward, illustrating Senusret III’s policy of fixing a defensible frontier and regulating mobility, trade, and security at the cataracts.
Fortifications at Semna (west bank) and Kumma/Kummeh (east bank; often called Semna East) controlled a Nile bottleneck at the Semna cataract, enabling surveillance and enforcement of the frontier proclaimed under Senusret III.
Buhen’s large fortress (often dated to around c. 1860 BCE) served as a key northern anchor of the Second Cataract defensive chain, helping link upstream forts into a coordinated frontier system.
A later major Nubian expedition is attested for regnal Year 19, part of Senusret III’s sequence of campaigns used to suppress resistance and reinforce Egypt’s extended frontier system around the Second Cataract.
A small fort on Dabenarti island near Mirgissa is attributed to Twelfth Dynasty frontier strategy (with construction beginning under Senusret I and continuing under Senusret III), supporting a paired barrier system for monitoring movement and protecting approaches.
The mudbrick fortress of Shalfak was built under Senusret III as one element in a chain of Middle Kingdom forts intended to secure Egypt’s southern border in Lower Nubia against threats associated with the Kingdom of Kerma.
At Uronarti, a major fortress on an island south of the Second Cataract formed part of the broader Middle Kingdom fort network (initiated under Senusret I and expanded/used under Senusret III) to command river channels and support patrol logistics.
The island fortress of Askut is attributed to Senusret III and reflects the same strategic logic as neighboring forts: a defended harbor/entry system, storage, and garrison facilities for controlling river traffic and frontier movement.
The Second Cataract forts (Buhen through Semna and associated sites) were positioned for mutual support and communication, serving as bases for patrols and as checkpoints for controlling desert routes and riverborne traffic into Egypt.
By fixing the frontier at Semna and maintaining garrisons in the fort network, Senusret III’s regime institutionalized Egyptian control over Lower Nubia—an approach that shaped later Middle Kingdom administration and security in the region.
