Seqenenre Tao’s successor Kamose carried the war northward, attacking Hyksos-controlled territories and publicizing his successes on victory stelae at Karnak—setting the stage for Ahmose I’s final campaigns.
Ahmose I came to the throne while Egypt remained divided between Theban rulers in the south and Hyksos power in the Delta. His reign is commonly placed in the mid-16th century BCE (with exact dates debated).
Evidence associated with the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus is used to reconstruct an early phase of Ahmose’s strategy in the Delta: operating through key nodes such as Heliopolis and the border fortress of Tjaru to cut Hyksos communications and supplies before the decisive fighting at Avaris.
Ahmose I pressed the war into the eastern Delta and began repeated assaults on Avaris (Tell el-Dabʿa), the Hyksos capital. The tomb autobiography of the soldier Ahmose, son of Ebana, is a key near-contemporary narrative source for this phase.
After multiple attacks, Ahmose I captured Avaris, breaking Hyksos control of the Delta and effectively ending the Second Intermediate Period’s political fragmentation in the north.
Following the fall of Avaris, Ahmose pursued the Hyksos into southern Canaan and besieged their stronghold Sharuhen for three years—aimed at preventing a Hyksos return and securing Egypt’s northeastern frontier.
Synthesis of archaeological and inscriptional evidence suggests Egypt’s reunification was completed relatively late in Ahmose’s ~25-year reign, with durable administrative and military structures that became characteristic of the New Kingdom state.
The capture of Sharuhen concluded the main “wars of liberation” against the Hyksos by eliminating their principal refuge and demonstrating Egypt’s renewed ability to project force into the Levant.
Ahmose redirected forces south to reassert control in Nubia, suppressing uprisings (including those attributed to figures named Aata and Tetian in later summaries) and reestablishing Egyptian authority over strategic southern territories.
Rock inscriptions dated to Year 22 of Ahmose’s reign (at el-Masara/Tura quarry region) attest ongoing royal-organized quarrying and construction activity after the major wars—evidence of a stabilized, reunified state.
In consolidating the south, Egyptian control in Nubia was organized through key strongpoints; later summaries of early 18th-dynasty policy describe administration centered on fortified sites such as Buhen, supporting long-term imperial governance.
Early in the 18th Dynasty, Ahmose commissioned the Tempest (Storm) Stele, which describes an extraordinary storm and the king’s ordered restorations—an inscription later found in fragments in Karnak’s Third Pylon fill and published in the 1960s.
In later historiographical tradition preserved via Manetho (as quoted by Josephus), the king who expelled the “shepherds” (Hyksos) is named (variantly) Tethmôsis/Amôsis and given a reign length of 25 years, 4 months, reflecting how central Ahmose’s victory became in Egyptian historical memory.
