At the start of the New Kingdom, royal patronage at Karnak intensified as early 18th Dynasty rulers reasserted Amun’s central place in state religion after the Second Intermediate Period. This set the conditions for centuries of expansion and for Karnak’s role as a primary setting for state ritual and legitimacy-making.
Hatshepsut constructed the Eighth Pylon on the southern processional route, extending Karnak’s ritual landscape and formalizing movement through the precinct for major ceremonies. Later rulers reworked much of its decoration, illustrating how ritual space at Karnak remained politically contested and continuously updated.
Hatshepsut began the Red Chapel (Chapelle Rouge) as a quartzite barque shrine for Amun within the temple core. Its reliefs prominently depict festival processions (notably Opet and the Beautiful Feast of the Valley), showing how architecture and carved ritual scenes worked together to stage divine kingship inside Karnak.
Thutmose III erected the Akh-menu (Festival Hall) to support jubilee (Heb-Sed) ideology and broader regenerative cult activities. The building’s placement and program tied kingship renewal to Amun’s precinct, and it later became associated with major festival use, reinforcing Karnak as a ritual engine of the state.
After Hatshepsut’s reign, Thutmose III ultimately disassembled the Red Chapel and replaced it with his own bark shrine. The episode illustrates how ritual installations at Karnak were not only sacred furnishings but also instruments of dynastic memory and political messaging.
Amenhotep III built the Third Pylon on Karnak’s main east–west axis, reshaping circulation and monumentalizing the approach toward the inner precinct. Its decoration emphasized royal jubilees and bark processions, aligning state festival performance with the architecture of access and display.
Construction of the Third Pylon incorporated blocks from earlier chapels and monuments as internal fill, a practice that both accelerated building and physically embedded earlier sacred architecture into later monumental phases. This reuse is crucial for modern reconstruction of earlier ritual spaces at Karnak (e.g., dismantled shrines recovered from pylon cores).
Following the Amarna period, rulers including Tutankhamun and Horemheb promoted restoration of traditional cult, including reworking earlier monuments and images at Karnak. These actions reinforced the precinct’s ritual orthodoxy and helped re-legitimate kingship through renewed emphasis on Amun’s temple.
Horemheb constructed the Ninth Pylon along the southern processional route, expanding the ceremonial corridor used for major festivals. The structure notably reused dismantled stone from Akhenaten’s East Karnak Aten temples as building fill, materially converting a prior religious program into the fabric of Amun’s precinct.
Seti I initiated the monumental Great Hypostyle Hall between earlier pylons, creating an immense, column-filled space suited to large-scale temple liturgy and royal display. Its relief program includes extensive ritual scenes that articulate the king’s role in maintaining divine order through temple service.
Ramesses II finished much of the Hypostyle Hall’s decoration, shifting in places from raised to sunk relief and inserting his royal names and iconography. The result is a layered ritual-and-royal narrative across columns and walls, showing how successive reigns used Karnak’s main ceremonial interiors to broadcast legitimacy.
During the New Kingdom, the Opet Festival centered on processions of divine barques (Amun, Mut, and Khonsu) between Karnak and Luxor, ritually renewing kingship and divine potency. Textual and iconographic traditions indicate that by the reign of Ramesses III the festival’s duration had increased substantially compared with earlier New Kingdom practice.
