After mid-15th century BCE conquests, Beth Shean (Beit She’an) became a long-lived Egyptian administrative and military center in the southern Levant, illustrating the New Kingdom practice of sustaining garrisons to secure routes, manage vassal territories, and support frontier defense-in-depth.
During the New Kingdom, the Way of Horus functioned as the primary militarized corridor from the eastern Delta across north Sinai toward Rafah, lined with fortifications and water points. It served both defensive needs (protecting Delta access) and offensive logistics (launching campaigns into Canaan/Syria).
Tjaru—known later as Sile—was a principal frontier fortress/town on the Way of Horus, controlling entry/exit between Egypt and Canaan. Modern scholarship commonly associates it with remains around Tell el-Hebua/Tel Habwa near Qantara, emphasizing its role as a strategic gateway and administrative checkpoint.
Archaeological work at Tell el-Kharouba (north Sinai) has identified a large New Kingdom-era military fortress—one of several along the Horus Military Road—illustrating the scale of built defenses (walls, towers, internal residential areas) supporting Egypt’s eastern border security and campaign logistics.
Reliefs associated with Seti I’s Year 1 campaigns at Karnak include a detailed panorama of forts and wells on Egypt’s eastern frontier/through north Sinai. These scenes have long been used as a major source for reconstructing the New Kingdom border-defense system tied to the Way of Horus.
Under Ramesses II, Egypt maintained and reinforced imperial outposts in the Levant. A dated royal stele from Beth Shean (regnal year 18) reflects continuing garrisoned administration and the importance of fortified nodes securing the inland routes tied to Egypt’s coastal and valley corridors.
By the later New Kingdom, Egypt’s effective control in the Levant narrowed. Evidence summarized for the reign of Ramesses VI indicates that Egyptian presence in Canaan ended during or soon after his rule, with remaining garrisons departing and the frontier reverting to a more strictly fortified border line.
The broader political fragmentation at the close of the New Kingdom curtailed Egypt’s ability to sustain distant garrisons and fortified outposts. This transition marked a major contraction from the earlier system of route fortresses, supply points, and Levantine administrative strongholds maintained during peak imperial centuries.
