Ramesses II begins his reign as pharaoh of Egypt’s 19th Dynasty, launching a long rule associated with renewed imperial ambitions in the Levant, extensive temple construction, and highly developed royal image-making.
In the first years of his reign, Ramesses II continues Egyptian military activity in the Levant, pursuing control over strategic cities and trade routes contested with the Hittite sphere.
Egyptian and Hittite forces clash near Kadesh on the Orontes River in a major chariot battle. Although both sides later framed the outcome as a success, modern scholarship generally treats the result as inconclusive—yet it became central to Ramesses’ royal propaganda.
Ramesses II orders monumental versions of the Kadesh accounts (commonly called the Poem and the Bulletin) to be carved repeatedly on major temples (including Luxor, Karnak, Abydos, Abu Simbel, and the Ramesseum), turning the battle into a lasting statement of kingship and divine favor.
Work starts on Ramesses II’s mortuary temple (later called the Ramesseum) on the west bank at Thebes. Its reliefs prominently include scenes of foreign wars, reinforcing the king’s public image and cult after death.
Ramesses II commissions the rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel near Egypt’s southern frontier. The project projected royal power into Nubia and celebrated the king (and, in the smaller temple, Queen Nefertari) through colossal statuary and divine associations.
Ramesses II develops Pi-Ramesses (near the earlier site of Avaris) into a major royal residence and administrative center in the eastern Nile Delta, aligning the court more directly with Levantine theaters of war and diplomacy.
Ramesses II and Hittite king Ḫattušili III conclude the Egyptian–Hittite peace treaty (often called the Eternal/Silver Treaty). Surviving versions from both sides make it a landmark of Bronze Age diplomacy and a cornerstone for stabilizing Egypt’s northern frontier.
A diplomatic marriage links the Egyptian and Hittite royal houses when a Hittite princess (known in Egypt as Maathorneferure) becomes one of Ramesses II’s wives, reinforcing the post-treaty relationship through kinship ties.
Under the viceroy of Kush Setau, Ramesses II’s Nubian temple program expands with sites such as Wadi es-Sebua, using monumental architecture to anchor Egyptian authority and cult practice in the south.
At Luxor Temple, Ramesses II adds a major new forecourt and pylon, reshaping how visitors entered and experienced the temple. The additions linked royal presence to prominent state cult spaces and public ceremony.
Ramesses II dies after roughly six and a half decades on the throne and is succeeded by his son Merneptah. His reign left an outsized archaeological footprint—temples, statues, inscriptions—and enduring models of royal commemoration.
