The start of Egypt’s Old Kingdom is conventionally dated to the beginning of the Third Dynasty. Across the period, royal titulary and monumental inscriptions expand in scale and complexity, moving from earlier serekh-based naming into the more standardized multi-part titulary and increasingly extensive temple and pyramid texts.
Old Kingdom rulers continued the long-established practice of presenting the Horus name within a serekh (palace-facade frame), reinforcing kingship’s association with Horus and providing a highly visible royal identifier on seals, labels, and monuments.
High officials under Djoser, such as Hesy-Ra (Hesire), are associated with finely carved wooden panels bearing hieroglyphic inscriptions and titles—evidence for the growing prestige and visibility of formal inscriptional display in elite funerary contexts alongside royal projects.
The cartouche (shenu-ring-derived oval enclosure) begins appearing for royal names toward the end of the Third Dynasty and becomes common in the Fourth Dynasty. This innovation formalized how certain royal names were visually protected and highlighted on monuments.
By the reign of Sneferu (early Fourth Dynasty), cartouches become widely used for royal names in monumental contexts, a key step toward the later standardized “great names” system and toward more regularized monumental royal epigraphy.
The Golden Horus (Horus-of-Gold) name is generally placed as emerging in the Fourth Dynasty, adding another durable element to royal titulary and giving kings an additional ideologically loaded epithet used in formal presentation.
Under Djedefre (Fourth Dynasty), the title Sa-Ra (“Son of Ra”) is first attested, expressing a strengthened theological link between the king and the solar deity Ra. This becomes a crucial component in the later fivefold titulary (especially for the birth name/nomen).
The Diary of Merer (from the Wadi al-Jarf papyri), dated to Khufu’s reign, preserves administrative writing that includes royal cartouches, showing how royal names and titles circulated not only in stone relief but also in bureaucratic documentary practice.
From the early Fifth Dynasty, the “Son of Ra” element becomes more consistently used as part of royal self-presentation, contributing to the mature, increasingly standardized titulary conventions that characterize later Old Kingdom royal monuments.
A major step in monumental historiography is represented by the Royal Annals (surviving as the Palermo Stone and related fragments), probably produced in the Fifth Dynasty and listing kings and year-by-year events through the early Fifth Dynasty—an early “historical text” tradition in monumental form.
The Abusir Papyri (Fifth Dynasty, 24th century BCE) preserve extensive administrative records of royal mortuary establishments (rosters, offerings, inventories). They show how written documentation complemented monumental inscriptions and reflect a mature bureaucratic writing culture closely tied to royal cult institutions.
In the late Fifth Dynasty, Unas is the first king whose pyramid chambers are inscribed with the Pyramid Texts—a major transformation in monumental inscription practice, placing extensive religious compositions on royal burial architecture and setting a pattern continued in Sixth Dynasty pyramids.
A series of inscribed royal decrees at Coptos begins in the Sixth Dynasty, with the earliest examples attributed to Pepi I. These texts show royal authority expressed through formal legal/administrative inscription in temple space, extending monumental writing beyond mortuary and commemorative contexts.
In the Sixth Dynasty, Pepi II issued decrees (preserved as limestone blocks from the Min temple at Coptos) granting institutional protections such as immunity from certain official exactions. These documents illustrate the late Old Kingdom’s well-developed epigraphic culture of state administration and temple economy.
The end of the Old Kingdom is conventionally placed around the later Sixth to Eighth Dynasties, followed by the First Intermediate Period. By this point, royal titulary had developed major components (including cartouche-enclosed names and solar affiliation) and monumental inscriptions ranged from historical annals to extensive funerary and legal texts.
