During the Mature Harappan (urban) phase, Mohenjo-daro’s elevated citadel area was laid out with major public buildings, setting the architectural context for large communal installations such as the Great Bath.
The Great Bath was built in the 3rd millennium BCE as part of Mohenjo-daro’s citadel complex, representing one of the Indus civilization’s most distinctive monumental public works.
The tank was engineered to be watertight using tightly fitted bricks and bitumen sealing—an important example of Harappan expertise in water management and durable public construction.
The Great Bath complex included broad staircases descending into the tank and an arrangement of adjacent rooms and courtyards, suggesting controlled access and structured use rather than an ad hoc basin.
Archaeological descriptions commonly report a tank about 12 m by 7 m, with a maximum depth around 2.4 m, underscoring its scale as a purpose-built public facility.
Evidence indicates water was supplied from a large nearby well, and an outlet led to a substantial drain—linking the Great Bath to Mohenjo-daro’s broader sanitation and hydraulic infrastructure.
While its exact function remains uncertain, many scholars interpret the Great Bath as used for ritual bathing/purification, fitting broader Indus emphases on water, cleanliness, and controlled public space.
By around 1900 BCE, the Mature Harappan urban system began to fragment; large planned centers such as Mohenjo-daro declined, changing the social settings in which major ritual/public structures were maintained and used.
Archaeological Survey of India officer R. D. Banerji visited the site in 1919–1920, recognized evidence of great antiquity, and helped trigger large-scale excavations that would expose features including the Great Bath.
Large-scale excavations commenced in 1924–1925 under K. N. Dikshit, initiating systematic exposure of the city’s monumental architecture and urban infrastructure.
Excavations led by John Marshall in 1925–1926 further revealed Mohenjo-daro’s major buildings and clarified the significance of its planned public spaces, including the Great Bath complex.
In the 1930s, further excavations under Marshall and others (including Ernest Mackay) expanded documentation of Mohenjo-daro’s architectural planning and the interconnection of drainage, wells, and public works.
Additional excavations were carried out in 1945 by Mortimer Wheeler and colleagues, contributing to mid-20th-century syntheses of Harappan urbanism and public architecture.
The final major excavation series at Mohenjo-daro took place in 1964–1965 under George F. Dales, after which research priorities shifted toward limiting further exposure and damage.
After 1965, extensive excavations were effectively banned due to accelerating weathering of exposed remains; permitted work focused on salvage, survey, documentation, and conservation.
In 1980, the Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, formalizing international recognition and conservation obligations for structures such as the Great Bath.
In the 1980s, German and Italian teams led by Michael Jansen and Maurizio Tosi applied less-invasive techniques (architectural documentation and surface survey), supporting conservation-minded study of major features including the Great Bath precinct.
Extreme 2022 rains and flooding in Sindh were reported to have damaged parts of Mohenjo-daro’s exposed ruins, prompting mitigation measures (including protective mud slurry layers) aligned with UNESCO-oriented conservation practice.
