By around 1200 CE, Mayapán emerged as a key political and religious center in northern Yucatán, with architecture that emulated elements of Chichén Itzá. This ascent underpins why later traditions cast Mayapán as a hub of regional governance.
After Chichén Itzá’s decline, Mayapán is described as becoming the dominant political power in Yucatán for a long span in the Postclassic period. This shift marks the effective center of gravity for northern lowland Maya politics moving to Mayapán.
Later Maya and Spanish-era accounts describe (and modern summaries repeat) a political alliance sometimes called the League of Mayapán, associated with major northern Yucatán centers including Mayapán, Uxmal, and Chichén Itzá. Modern scholarship treats the “league” as partly legendary and difficult to reconcile precisely, but it remains an important framework for discussing Postclassic regional politics.
Mayapán developed as a fortified, densely built city with thousands of structures inside its walls, reflecting both population concentration and an increasingly militarized political landscape in Postclassic Yucatán.
Ethnohistoric narratives and archaeological interpretations commonly associate Mayapán’s later governing elite with the Cocom lineage, remembered for increasingly autocratic rule and for relying on broader networks to maintain control over the city and its provinces.
The Book of Chilam Balam of Chumayel (as summarized for general audiences) records that in K’atun 1 Ajaw (1382–1401 CE) the Cocom expelled the Xiu, helping the Cocom consolidate control over ceremonies, economy, and political life at Mayapán.
Chronicle traditions also describe a period in which mercenaries controlled by the Cocom abused residents of Mayapán, contributing to rising resentment and setting the stage for violent political rupture.
In K’atun 8 Ajaw (1441–1461 CE), surviving Xiu factions are said to have revolted against Cocom rule in a famous episode involving an invitation and ambush; accounts emphasize the near-total killing of the Cocom ruling house.
Archaeology aligns with revolt narratives by indicating burned buildings and destroyed altars dating to the period of Mayapán’s political collapse, supporting the view that the city’s central authority ended violently rather than by gradual abandonment alone.
Following the revolt, the confederacy of ruling houses and provinces associated with the League of Mayapán is described as disintegrating, and northern Yucatán politics returning to a mosaic of rival polities with frequent warfare.
Mayapán’s Cocom rulers were overthrown and the city was abandoned around 1450 CE (often given as circa 1450), ending Mayapán’s role as the dominant regional center.
In the aftermath of Mayapán’s fall, the former unified (or semi-unified) political landscape of northern Yucatán is widely described as breaking into numerous independent kuchkabals (regional polities), shaping the political fragmentation encountered in the early Spanish contact era.
