A major legal-economic monument, the Manishtushu Obelisk (Louvre Sb 20), records the king’s purchase of multiple land parcels totaling thousands of hectares, demonstrating how large-scale property transactions could be formalized and preserved in durable inscriptions alongside tablet documentation.
Naram-Sin’s reign is a key horizon for the mature Sargonic legal tradition; contracts and administrative records from this era reflect stabilized formulas (parties, object of transaction, witnesses) and the ongoing use of seals as legal authentication.
During Shar-Kali-Sharri’s reign, Old Akkadian documentation continues, but the broader political stresses of the later empire form the backdrop for contracting and property management in institutional and private contexts.
Following Shar-Kali-Sharri, rulers such as Dudu and Shu-Turul represent the late Akkadian phase. Contract writing persisted, but political fragmentation and competing powers (including Gutian elements in some reconstructions) affected the administrative landscape in which legal texts were produced.
