Dilmun (centered on Bahrain and nearby Gulf coasts) is consistently presented in Mesopotamian tradition as a major trade partner and intermediary on Gulf routes, linking Mesopotamia with regions to the southeast and east. During the later 3rd millennium BCE, it functioned as a critical node in maritime commerce.
By the late Akkadian period, compounded stresses (including internal instability and external pressures) weakened imperial control over corridors and peripheries that had supported long-distance commerce, contributing to a more fragmented political landscape for trade.
Around the end of the 22nd century BCE (often placed near c. 2150 BCE), the Akkadian imperial system collapsed. The breakup reduced centralized oversight of routes and ports, reshaping the organization of interregional exchange in Mesopotamia and the Gulf into the post-Akkadian era.
