A well-known diary tablet provides a contemporary Babylonian notice of events around Alexander’s victory over Darius III at Gaugamela (1 October 331 BCE) and subsequent developments, illustrating the Diaries’ value as non-Greek narrative evidence for major political events.

The overall span of the Astronomical Diaries tradition is commonly described as extending for centuries, with surviving tablets ranging into the 1st century BCE, reflecting the persistence of scholarly observational practice in Babylonia under changing imperial regimes.
Assyriologist Abraham J. Sachs published Late Babylonian Astronomical and Related Texts (1955), an important modern milestone in making late cuneiform astronomical material—including diary-related texts—accessible for historical study.
Sachs and Hunger’s Astronomical Diaries and Related Texts from Babylonia began appearing in a critical multi-volume edition; Volume I (1988) covers Diaries from 652 BCE to 262 BCE, establishing a standard scholarly reference for the early corpus.
Volume II (1989) of Astronomical Diaries and Related Texts from Babylonia extended the edited and translated Diary sequence through 261–165 BCE, covering much of the early-to-mid Seleucid period.
