An Old Babylonian archive from Tell al Rimah (letters and economic records) shows textiles, garments, and labor organization embedded in regional exchange networks. The correspondence is dated by scholarship to Hammurabi’s later years (roughly years 32–38), illustrating how production management and trade were closely connected.
The Code of Hammurabi (an 18th-century BCE compilation) reflects a legal environment for contracts, wages, transport liability, loans, and collateral—key elements for administered economies and long-distance trade. While not a trade manual, it evidences the state’s interest in standardizing dispute resolution for economic life.
After Hammurabi, Samsu-iluna (often dated 1749–1712 BCE, Middle Chronology) confronted major uprisings and territorial losses. The shrinking of effective control—especially in the far south—reduced administrative reach and likely reoriented state finance toward defensible cores and dependable revenue streams.
Old Babylonian documentation and comparative studies describe merchants (Akkadian tamkārum) operating across a spectrum—from institutionally embedded agents to more independent entrepreneurs—often linked to palace/temple finance. This mixed structure helped move bulk staples and high-value goods through credit, advances, and “accounting” in silver equivalents.
King Ammi-saduqa (Middle Chronology often c. 1646–1626 BCE) is chiefly remembered for a surviving mīšarum edict proclaiming economic “equity/justice,” including debt cancellation and release of some persons held through debt. Such edicts were tools of statecraft that reset obligations and stabilized households and revenues.
Samsu-ditana (often dated 1625–1595 BCE, Middle Chronology) is listed as the final ruler of Babylon’s First Dynasty. Late Old Babylonian administration operated under mounting external pressure and shrinking territorial control, conditions that constrained long-distance trade security and state provisioning.
The sack of Babylon by the Hittite king Mursili I is commonly placed at 1595 BCE in the Middle Chronology (with alternative chronologies also proposed). This event ended the Amorite First Dynasty and disrupted Babylon’s administrative continuity and trade networks, opening the way for Kassite-era reconfiguration.
