The third voyage expanded Ming presence through Indian Ocean ports and, according to standard reconstructions, reached as far as Hormuz; it consolidated tributary ties and showcased fleet capacity over longer distances.
During the fourth voyage, the fleet traveled beyond South Asia to Hormuz and extended into the Red Sea/Arabian region and down the East African coast (e.g., Somalia and Kenya), returning with envoys from numerous states.
A giraffe—linked by Ming courtiers to the auspicious qilin—was presented to the Yongle Emperor in 1414, illustrating how exotic tribute objects from maritime routes were leveraged for court symbolism and legitimation narratives.
The fifth expedition largely served to transport foreign envoys and continue tributary diplomacy across established routes, including renewed contact with East African ports that featured in earlier voyages.
The sixth voyage was a shorter expedition compared with some earlier journeys; it continued envoy transport and tributary maintenance from Southeast Asia through the western Indian Ocean.
The Yongle Emperor ordered a temporary suspension of the treasure voyages, and the fleet’s role shifted toward garrisoning Nanjing—an early sign that court priorities and resources were moving away from large-scale maritime expeditions.
The Yongle Emperor’s death removed the principal patron of the maritime program, opening the way for policy change under his successor amid competing fiscal and strategic priorities.
Upon accession, the Hongxi Emperor discontinued Zheng He’s overseas expeditions, reflecting stronger influence of civil-official and Confucian priorities and a reduced appetite for costly eunuch-led maritime projects.
Under the Xuande Emperor, new imperial orders (recorded in later compilations of voyage chronology) set in motion provisioning and dispatch for a final expedition, reviving the program after years of suspension.
The final expedition departed in early 1431, reasserting Ming diplomatic maritime presence across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean after the long pause following 1424.
The Liujiagang inscription was erected at a Tianfei (Mazu) temple site, documenting Zheng He’s piety and commemorating the missions; such inscriptions are key primary evidence for how the voyages were framed to contemporaries.
A second major commemorative text (the Changle inscription) was set up at another Tianfei temple between late 1431 and early 1432, reinforcing the voyages’ religious-protective narrative and memorializing the undertaking.
Zheng He died in 1433 while the fleet was on its final expedition (often placed at Calicut/Kozhikode in standard summaries). After the fleet returned, the treasure-voyage program ended permanently.
