During the 18th century’s later decades, expanding settler stock-farming on the Cape Colony’s northern and north-eastern frontiers led to escalating commando raids and reprisals against San communities. These campaigns contributed to major disruption of hunter-gatherer lifeways through killings, forced displacement, and coerced labor capture.
Governor Lord Caledon issued the so-called Hottentot Proclamation (Caledon Code), tightening pass and contract controls over Khoekhoe movement and labor in the Cape Colony. While aimed at labor regulation, it formed part of a broader colonial legal environment that constrained Indigenous mobility and heightened vulnerability of frontier communities, including San bands pushed into conflict zones.
Ordinance 50 of 1828 repealed key elements of the 1809 proclamation and removed pass requirements for Khoisan people in the Cape Colony, formally expanding civil and labor rights (e.g., freer movement and clearer land-purchase rights). In practice, frontier inequality and dispossession pressures persisted, but the ordinance marked a major legal pivot in colonial governance of Indigenous labor and mobility.
The Kat River Settlement was founded in the eastern Cape Colony in 1829 as a frontier-defense measure and reserve for predominantly Khoi inhabitants. Although not a “San settlement,” it illustrates how colonial authorities sought to reorganize Indigenous communities into strategically located, armed buffer zones—part of the wider system of frontier control that shaped San–colonial encounters.
Slavery in the Cape Colony legally ended on 1 December 1834, followed by an “apprenticeship” period that extended forced labor conditions for many until 1838. The reconfiguration of labor systems after emancipation intersected with frontier expansion and intensified competition over land and labor—key pressures surrounding San displacement and coercion.
Beginning in 1835, the Great Trek saw thousands of Boers leave the Cape Colony for the interior. This movement reshaped regional power and land competition and contributed to expanding settler frontiers. For San communities—already under heavy pressure—expanded settler occupation and frontier militarization increased the likelihood of violent encounters and further dispossession.
Diamonds discovered in the late 1860s near the Vaal/Orange river confluence drew rapid immigration and state intervention. The resulting scramble for land and labor accelerated colonial encroachment into areas where San and other Indigenous groups lived or traveled, helping to drive administrative consolidation and coercive labor dynamics in the northwestern interior.
In 1870, after learning of ǀXam prisoners at Cape Town’s Breakwater Convict Station, W.H.I. Bleek and Lucy Lloyd obtained permission to relocate a prisoner, ǀaǃkunta, to their Mowbray home. This began a sustained, documented collaboration that preserved extensive ǀXam language and oral tradition at a moment of severe colonial disruption.
In November 1870, ǁKabbo encountered Bleek and Lloyd while imprisoned; in early 1871 he was transferred to their home, where (1871–1873) he provided expansive narratives on ǀXam life, history, and cosmology. His testimony became central to what is now known as the Bleek & Lloyd archive, a key record of San intellectual and cultural history under colonial rule.
On 27 October 1871, Britain proclaimed Griqualand West British territory amid diamond-field disputes. The new colonial regime intensified administrative control and land commodification in the northern interior; such consolidation typically reduced Indigenous autonomy and increased pressures on hunting and gathering ranges used by San and other communities.
Wilhelm H.I. Bleek died on 17 August 1875. Lucy Lloyd continued the work of recording, translating, and organizing ǀXam (and related) narratives and linguistic materials, sustaining one of the most significant documentary records of San languages and oral literature produced in the colonial period.
In 1879, the Cape Parliament extended the Peace Preservation Act to Basutoland to enforce disarmament—an example of late-19th-century colonial efforts to monopolize firearms and suppress African armed autonomy. Such disarmament policies (even when applied to other polities) reflect a broader regional trend of tightening coercive state power that also shaped conditions on frontiers where San people lived and worked.
In 1880, Griqualand West was incorporated into the Cape Colony (after earlier annexation as a separate British territory). Incorporation formalized colonial administration, taxation, and land governance over the diamond region, deepening dispossession dynamics that constrained Indigenous land use and mobility across the northern Cape.
Specimens of Bushman Folklore (1911) was published posthumously from materials recorded mainly in the 1870s by Bleek and Lloyd from ǀXam narrators. While outside the 1700–1900 window, the publication was a direct consequence of colonial-encounter documentation practices in the 19th century, making San narratives more widely accessible in print.
