The Treaty (Peace) of Turin ended the War of Chioggia between Venice and Genoa. Although Venice survived a severe crisis, the peace underscored the costs of naval rivalry among Italian maritime powers.
The Peace of Lodi concluded major conflict between Venice and Milan and helped inaugurate a decades-long balance among leading Italian states—important for Venice’s mainland (Terraferma) interests while it faced mounting Ottoman pressure overseas.
The Treaty of Constantinople (1479) ended a long Ottoman–Venetian war. Venice accepted major territorial losses but regained defined trading privileges, reflecting the republic’s recurring trade–security calculus in the eastern Mediterranean.
A broad coalition of major European powers created the League of Cambrai to curb Venetian power, revealing how Venice’s mainland expansion had come to threaten other states’ strategic interests.
At Agnadello, Venetian forces suffered a major defeat against France during the War of the League of Cambrai, rapidly endangering Venice’s Terraferma holdings and exposing limits of its military position in Italy.
Amid Napoleon’s Italian campaign and intense pressure, the Venetian Republic was dissolved when its political order collapsed and the Great Council accepted the end of the old regime, closing the long history of La Serenissima as an independent state.
Following the fall of the republic, a Provisional Municipality was installed during the French occupation, replacing the former institutions and reordering governance in the Veneto ahead of later transfer under international settlement.
The Treaty of Campo Formio ended war between France and Austria and transferred Venice and much of its former mainland and Adriatic territories to Austrian control, formalizing the diplomatic partition that ended Venetian independence.
