A major public reception scene dated to Year 12 shows foreign tribute presented at Amarna, indicating continued imperial diplomacy and court ceremony within the new religious-political order.
By approximately Year 14, royal family members disappear from the record; Meketaten is generally placed as dying around this time, consistent with broader disruption late in the Amarna era.
A dated inscription from Year 16 identifies Nefertiti as Great Royal Wife late in Akhenaten’s reign, revising older reconstructions that assumed she vanished after Year 12.
Akhenaten’s death ends the central phase of the Amarna religious program; the succession becomes complex and remains debated in parts, but the Aten-focused regime soon weakens.
The Amarna Letters corpus—international and vassal correspondence spanning late Amenhotep III through the Amarna rulers—ceases when the court leaves Akhetaten, commonly placed by Year 2 of Tutankhamun.
A formal decree (often dated to Year 4 of Tutankhamun) proclaims the repair and reinstatement of traditional cults and temples, documenting an official state-led repudiation of the Amarna religious settlement.
