Haudenosaunee oral tradition credits the Great Peacemaker (Deganawida) and Hiawatha with uniting the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca under the Great Law of Peace (Kaianere’kó:wa/Gayanashagowa). Many historians date the League’s formation to around the mid-15th century (often cited as c. 1450).
Samuel de Champlain, allied with Algonquin and Wendat (Huron) forces, fought Haudenosaunee warriors near what is now the Lake Champlain region in late July 1609. The encounter is widely treated as an early flashpoint in the wider 17th-century conflicts later called the Beaver Wars.
In June 1610, Champlain and Indigenous allies fought Mohawk warriors near present-day Sorel-Tracy on the Richelieu River. The battle reinforced patterns of French-allied versus Haudenosaunee conflict in the St. Lawrence–Richelieu corridor.
New France established Fort Richelieu at the mouth of the Richelieu River to help protect the St. Lawrence corridor and the fur trade from Haudenosaunee raids. The fort became part of a long-running contest over movement, trade routes, and security between New France and the Haudenosaunee.
Decades of conflict intensified in 1648–1649, when Haudenosaunee offensives brought a decisive defeat of the Wendat (Huron-Wendat) confederacy, reshaping Great Lakes politics and the fur trade by dispersing communities and disrupting Wendat middleman networks.
As the Haudenosaunee offensive against Huronia intensified, the Jesuit mission complex of Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was burned on June 16, 1649, rather than be captured. The event became emblematic of the collapse of the French-Wendat mission and trade hub in Huronia.
In the early 1650s, Haudenosaunee campaigns against the Neutral (Attawandaron/Chonnonton) forced displacement and led to large-scale assimilation or dispersal, part of a broader strategy to secure territory and control fur-bearing regions and routes.
Haudenosaunee forces fought the Erie beginning in the mid-1650s; by 1656 the Erie confederacy had been destroyed, with survivors fleeing or being absorbed. This further expanded Haudenosaunee influence around the lower Great Lakes.
England seized New Netherland in 1664 and organized it as the Province of New York, inheriting and reshaping earlier Dutch–Haudenosaunee trade and alliance structures that supplied firearms and goods. This transition helped set the stage for more formalized English–Haudenosaunee treaty diplomacy later in the century.
France sent the Carignan–Salières Regiment to New France in 1665 to curb Haudenosaunee raids and secure the colony. The force built or strengthened fortifications along the Richelieu River and prepared major expeditions into Haudenosaunee territory.
In fall 1666, Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy led a large French force that entered Mohawk territory; Mohawk communities were abandoned and then burned along with crops. The campaign contributed to the peace settlement reached the following year.
After the 1666 campaign, a major peace settlement was concluded between New France and the Haudenosaunee in 1667 (often described in scholarship as a “peace of 1667”), bringing a temporary reduction in large-scale raids and opening space for renewed diplomacy and trade competition.
Governor Frontenac ordered construction of Fort Frontenac (at present-day Kingston, Ontario) in 1673 to secure key fur-trade routes and counter Haudenosaunee pressure on French-allied nations. The fort became a strategic anchor for French presence on Lake Ontario.
In the summer of 1677, negotiations in Albany involving New York officials and Haudenosaunee leaders produced agreements regarded as foundational to the Covenant Chain alliance system. The Covenant Chain formalized diplomatic and trade relations tying the Haudenosaunee and English colonies (especially New York) in opposition to French influence.
In 1687, Governor Denonville led a punitive expedition against the Seneca, destroying villages and agricultural stores and taking captives. The operation escalated Franco–Haudenosaunee conflict late in the Beaver Wars era and contributed to retaliatory cycles.
On August 5, 1689, Mohawk warriors attacked the settlement of Lachine near Montreal, killing and capturing inhabitants and burning structures. The raid, during the wider Beaver Wars and King William’s War context, intensified calls for major reprisals and hardened frontier violence.
On August 4, 1701, New France and representatives of 39 First Nations—including the Haudenosaunee Confederacy—signed the Great Peace of Montreal. The treaty is widely recognized as ending the Beaver Wars and establishing a framework for broader inter-nation peace and prisoner exchange.
