By the mid-11th century, western Kipchak groupings expanded into the Pontic–Caspian steppe, a movement reflected across Byzantine, Latin, Armenian, and Rus' sources (where they appear under names such as Cumans/Comani and Polovtsy). This migration helped reshape steppe power balances and intensified steppe–sedentary frontier conflict.
From the mid-11th century, sustained conflict between the Cuman–Kipchak confederation and the principalities of Kievan Rus' became a defining feature of the Pontic steppe borderlands, combining raids, punitive expeditions, shifting alliances, and intermittent peace-making.
By the late 1070s, Cumans are attested south of the Danube in the Balkan theatre, first in connection with Pecheneg activity and soon as independent actors—alternating between service as allies/mercenaries and raids or settlement pressures on Byzantine territory.
Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, allied with Cuman forces, decisively defeated an invading Pecheneg army near Levounion. The battle is a key early example of Cumans operating as major coalition partners in Balkan power politics.
At Didgori, King David IV of Georgia won a major victory over a Seljuk-led coalition; contemporary and later accounts emphasize the participation of a large contingent of Cuman–Kipchak cavalry in the Georgian army, illustrating Kipchak military integration into Caucasian state-building.
A revolt beginning in 1185 against Byzantine rule in Moesia escalated into the restoration of Bulgarian statehood (the Second Bulgarian Empire). Cuman support is consistently noted among the forces backing the rebellion, reflecting the steppe confederation’s growing influence south of the Danube.
Following the siege of Lovech, Byzantine forces failed to suppress the rebels, and the outcome helped consolidate the restored Bulgarian polity—whose military efforts repeatedly relied on mobile allies, including steppe auxiliaries.
In a pivotal battle against the Latin Empire, Tsar Kaloyan’s forces—supported by substantial Cuman light cavalry—defeated the crusader army near Adrianople and captured Emperor Baldwin I. The event shows steppe cavalry tactics (notably feigned retreats) shaping Balkan outcomes after the Fourth Crusade.
A coalition of Rus' princes allied with Cuman forces was defeated by a Mongol army led by Jebe and Subutai at the Kalka River. The battle exposed the vulnerability of steppe and frontier coalitions to Mongol operational methods and foreshadowed broader conquest.
After Mongol pressure in the steppe zone, Cuman groups under the leadership of Köten sought refuge in the Kingdom of Hungary. The migration introduced a large nomadic population into the Hungarian plain and created both new military resources and significant internal tensions.
As Mongol invasion fears peaked, accusations that Cumans were colluding with the invaders contributed to violence in Hungary; Köten was killed at Pest, and many Cumans left the kingdom. Their departure weakened Hungarian defensive capacity on the eve of the Mongol campaign.
A multilingual practical manual (Latin–Persian–Cuman) associated with missionary and торгово-diplomatic needs in the Black Sea region was dated 1303 in the surviving Venetian copy. It preserves key evidence for the Cuman/Kipchak language and late medieval steppe–Mediterranean contacts.
