Architectural accounts commonly date completion of the Great Enclosure to roughly the mid-1400s, marking the culmination of one of the most ambitious phases of drystone construction at the site.
Around 1450, Great Zimbabwe’s role as capital ended as the city was abandoned; UNESCO links this shift to environmental and provisioning pressures (including deforestation and an inability of the hinterland to supply food for an overpopulated center).
In the early 16th century, Portuguese observers described a major stone-built center in the region (often associated with Great Zimbabwe in later historical writing), helping transmit knowledge of the site into early modern European documentary traditions.
