By the end of the Uruk/Jemdet Nasr horizon, southern Mesopotamia moved toward the Early Dynastic landscape of competing city-states. Uruk remained important, but urban power and cultural trajectories diversified across the region.
The Warka (Uruk) Vase, one of the earliest surviving narrative relief sculptures, is generally dated to the late 4th millennium BCE (often around the Uruk III/Jemdet Nasr horizon). Its imagery is central to interpretations of cult, offering, and institutional hierarchy at Uruk.
Around the transition to the Jemdet Nasr period, Uruk’s far-flung material-cultural footprint diminished in many peripheral zones, and regional styles became more prominent—often described as a partial retreat or reconfiguration of the earlier Uruk expansion network.
In the subsequent phase commonly labeled Uruk III (often aligned with the Jemdet Nasr horizon), proto-cuneiform texts become more numerous and are also attested at other southern Mesopotamian sites—evidence that the new administrative technology was diffusing regionally.
The earliest proto-cuneiform tablets—primarily administrative records—appear in Uruk (notably from Eanna-area deposits), representing the emergence of writing in Mesopotamia and a major milestone in the management of labor, goods, and institutions.
By the mid–late 4th millennium BCE, complex tokens (often with markings) expanded the older token system, enabling more nuanced accounting of manufactured goods and institutional production—part of the administrative toolkit that preceded writing.
On the Middle Euphrates (modern Syria), Habuba Kabira was founded on virgin soil and rapidly built out as a planned, walled settlement associated with the Uruk expansion—often discussed as an example of Uruk colonization/outpost-building beyond southern Mesopotamia.
Jebel Aruda (Syria) was occupied in the late 4th millennium BCE in phases associated with the Uruk period. Its Uruk-affiliated material culture and setting near Habuba Kabira make it a key site for understanding how Uruk institutions operated along the Euphrates corridor.
At Hacınebi Tepe on the Euphrates in southeastern Anatolia, a local settlement was joined by a distinct Uruk-related enclave in the later 4th millennium BCE. This has been used to illustrate that Uruk interaction could involve co-residence and trade alongside local communities.
Construction and rebuilding in Uruk’s Eanna precinct intensified through the 4th millennium BCE, producing large-scale public/ceremonial architecture that reflects growing institutional capacity and urban centralization at Uruk.
Beveled-rim bowls—mass-produced, standardized vessels—begin appearing in early Uruk contexts and later spread widely. Their scale and uniformity are often linked to mass provisioning (e.g., labor rations) and are a key archaeological indicator of Uruk cultural presence.
In southern Mesopotamia, the end of the Ubaid period gave way to the Uruk period, marked by accelerating settlement aggregation, increasing social differentiation, and the growth of Uruk into a major urban center that would shape wider Near Eastern developments.
