In the 6th century BCE, Rome’s early drainage works—later known as the Cloaca Maxima—were begun as an open channel, enabling drier building ground around the Forum valley and supporting denser urban development.
The first Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline—Rome’s paramount state sanctuary—was traditionally inaugurated at the start of the Republic in 509 BCE, becoming a focal point for civic religion and monumental building.

In 46 BCE, Julius Caesar dedicated the Forum of Caesar (Forum Iulium), creating an additional civic plaza adjacent to the crowded Republican Forum and signaling a new phase of elite-driven, large-scale urban reconfiguration.
In 28 BCE, Augustus began the Mausoleum of Augustus, a dynastic tomb set within a broader landscaped zone; it reshaped the northern Campus Martius and tied urban space to the new regime’s ideology and succession planning.
On 30 January 9 BCE, the Ara Pacis Augustae was dedicated, monumentalizing Augustan peace in the Campus Martius and reinforcing the linkage between ceremonial procession space, dynastic imagery, and Rome’s evolving urban showpiece districts.
In 2 BCE, Augustus inaugurated the Forum of Augustus with the Temple of Mars Ultor, adding another major forum complex that relieved pressure on older civic spaces while projecting imperial justice, memory, and military legitimacy into the city’s core fabric.
After Augustus’ death on 19 August 14 CE, his Res Gestae—completed shortly before his death and left with instructions for public inscription—helped frame his building works and Rome’s transformation as an official narrative for the new imperial city.
