During Rajaraja I’s reign, Thanjavur was expanded and monumentalized as an imperial capital, with state resources and ritual authority increasingly organized through major temple endowments and administrative record-keeping.

UNESCO inscribed the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur as a World Heritage property, formalizing international recognition of the Chola temple-city’s architectural and cultural significance.
UNESCO extended the World Heritage designation to include the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple and the Airavatesvara Temple, reframing the Chola temple-city system as a network of “Great Living Chola Temples.”
