Aristophanes’ comedy Clouds was produced in 423 BCE, presenting a satirical “Socrates” as a sophist-like intellectual and contributing to a broader public caricature that Plato later says prejudiced audiences against him.
Later sources report Socrates served in the northern theater of the war around the Amphipolis campaign (422 BCE), one of the major engagements of the Archidamian phase of the Peloponnesian War.

After Athens’ defeat, the oligarchic Thirty Tyrants (404/403 BCE) ordered arrests; later accounts report Socrates refused to participate in the attempted seizure of Leon of Salamis, aligning with the image of principled noncompliance later emphasized in Plato’s Apology.
In 399 BCE, Socrates was formally accused—associated in later tradition with Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon—on charges centered on impiety (not acknowledging the city’s gods/introducing new divine beings) and corrupting the youth.
