Mark Antony staged the Donations of Alexandria, publicly distributing eastern territories and royal titles to Cleopatra VII and her children (including Caesarion). The ceremony intensified Roman political opposition by framing Antony’s eastern program in overtly monarchical terms.
After Octavian’s propaganda campaign and political maneuvering in Rome, the Roman Senate declared war on Cleopatra VII (with Antony as her ally), formalizing the final conflict of the Roman Republic often called the War of Actium.
In the Coniuratio Italiae ("Oath of Italy"), communities across Italy swore allegiance to Octavian and demanded him as leader for the coming war. Augustus later highlighted this oath in the Res Gestae as a key source of legitimacy.
Antony and Cleopatra positioned their forces in Greece during the winter campaigning season, setting the stage for a decisive contest with Octavian for control of the Roman world.
Octavian’s admiral Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa captured Methone by storm, part of the wider naval and logistical campaign that disrupted Antony’s communications and contributed to trapping his forces near Actium.
Octavian’s fleet won a decisive naval victory over the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium, near the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf. The defeat shattered Antony’s strategic position and made Octavian the dominant power in the Roman world.
In the aftermath of the naval defeat, the remaining Antonian position in Greece collapsed; Antony’s land army surrendered shortly afterward, removing any realistic chance of rebuilding the war effort in the eastern Mediterranean.
After the conquest, Egypt was reorganized as a Roman province governed by an equestrian prefect directly responsible to Octavian (later Augustus). This arrangement made Egypt a uniquely controlled imperial possession rather than a standard senatorial province.
Octavian pursued Antony and Cleopatra into Egypt and fought a campaign culminating in the siege and capture of Alexandria, the political center of the Ptolemaic kingdom.

Following the collapse of his remaining forces and amid reports that Cleopatra was dead, Mark Antony took his own life. His death removed Octavian’s last major rival from the civil wars.
Octavian had Caesarion (Ptolemy XV), Cleopatra’s co-ruler and alleged son of Julius Caesar, put to death soon after the fall of Alexandria. With his execution, the Ptolemaic royal line was extinguished and Egypt ceased to exist as an independent monarchy.
Cleopatra VII died in Alexandria after failed negotiations and captivity under Octavian; ancient sources disagree on the precise method. Her death marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty’s rule in Egypt.
