Skandagupta is generally treated as the last major Gupta ruler; after his final securely dated records (c. 467–468 CE), the imperial center enters a period of dynastic uncertainty and weakening control over outlying regions.
Purugupta (traditionally r. 467–473) succeeds Skandagupta. The lack of inscriptions in his own name and reliance on seals/genealogical evidence reflect the reduced visibility and cohesion of the late imperial court.
Kumaragupta II (often placed c. 473–476) is one of several short-reigning late Guptas, a pattern that underscores succession volatility and the narrowing effective reach of the imperial administration.
Budhagupta (commonly c. 476–495) rules as Gupta capacity to defend the northwest deteriorates. Inscriptions from this era help document continued Gupta presence even as external pressures intensify.
Narasimhagupta Baladitya (often c. 495–530) is associated in later tradition with resistance to the Hunas. His reign illustrates a weakened but still functioning Gupta kingship centered in the east (Magadha).
In the late 490s, the Alchon Huns under Toramana penetrate the northwest. A major clash traditionally dated to 498 at Eran is associated with Huna success and the erosion of Gupta authority in Malwa and adjoining regions.
By around 500 CE, much of the Gupta northwest is described as overrun by the Hunas, contributing to the empire’s fiscal strain and encouraging regional powers and former feudatories to act autonomously.
In 528 CE, a coalition led by Yashodharman of Malwa and the Gupta ruler Narasimhagupta defeats the Huna king Mihirakula at Sondani, marking a turning point in limiting Huna dominance in much of northern India.
Kumaragupta III (often placed c. 530–540) appears in a political landscape dominated by regional competitors; the Guptas persist, but increasingly as one power among many rather than as an empire.
A stone inscription associated with Yashodharman-Vishnuvardhana (c. 532) records his political-military stature in Malwa, reflecting the rise of strong regional powers in territories formerly under Gupta influence.
A Damodarpur copper-plate grant dated to year 224 (542–543 CE) in Vishnugupta’s name shows late Gupta authority continuing in parts of eastern India even as wider imperial structures fragment.
Vishnugupta (commonly dated 540–550) is often treated as the last recognized Gupta emperor; by the mid-6th century, power is largely regionalized among successor states and former feudatories.
By the mid-6th century, Maukhari leaders—formerly Gupta feudatories—assert independence in the Ganga valley with their capital at Kanyakubja (Kannauj), illustrating the post-Gupta shift to competing regional monarchies.
