At Nigali Sagar (in the Lumbini region), Ashoka’s pillar inscription commemorates his actions connected to the stupa associated with a “past Buddha,” showing how pillar texts could memorialize pilgrimage, patronage, and monument-building as part of disseminating royal piety and legitimacy.
Ashoka’s Lumbini (Rummindei) pillar inscription records a royal visit and identifies Lumbini as the Buddha’s birthplace, coupled with administrative concessions to the village. It demonstrates the edicts’ dual function as commemorative religious record and governance instrument.
