Seleucus and Chandragupta concluded a settlement (commonly placed around 303 BCE) that redefined the northwestern frontier between the Seleucid and Mauryan realms and opened sustained diplomatic exchange between the two courts.
Seleucus dispatched Megasthenes as an ambassador to Chandragupta Maurya. His residence at/near the Mauryan court became a foundational Greek eyewitness channel for information about Mauryan governance, society, and the imperial capital.
Fragments preserved by Strabo (attributing details to Megasthenes) describe Palibothra/Pataliputra as a long, rectangular city defended by a wooden wall and an exterior trench, providing a rare external description of Mauryan urban defenses and planning.
Strabo’s citations present Megasthenes as valuing measured distances (e.g., routes to Palibothra and a major royal road), illustrating how Hellenistic geographical methods were applied to Mauryan India through court-connected reporting.
Strabo preserves Megasthenes’ striking figures for the Ganges (very great breadth at midstream and significant depth), exemplifying how Greek authors used embassy-derived testimony to revise Mediterranean views of Indian rivers and scale.
Later summaries, ultimately tracing to Megasthenes’ account, describe a Mauryan military administration structured through a commission divided into six boards (covering branches such as infantry, cavalry, chariots, elephants, supply/transport, and the fleet). This became a key Greek data point on Mauryan state capacity.
Greek transmission of Megasthenes’ observations (as echoed in later compilers) portrays Indian society as divided into seven broad groups. The scheme strongly influenced subsequent Greco-Roman ethnography of India, even as modern scholarship treats it cautiously as a Greek framing of complex social realities.
Megasthenes composed the Indica (commonly described as a work in four books). Although the original text did not survive, it became the chief source for later Greco-Roman descriptions of Mauryan India via quotation, paraphrase, and summary.
In the 1st century BCE, Diodorus Siculus included a description of India (Book II) that later editors identify as ultimately derived from Megasthenes, helping preserve key themes of Indica in a widely read universal history.
Around the Augustan era, Strabo both criticized and mined earlier writers, quoting Megasthenes for concrete details (notably on Palibothra and the Ganges). Strabo’s Geographica became one of the main conduits for Indica fragments.
In the 1st century CE, Pliny the Elder compiled distances and place sequences for India (Book VI), preserving a Greco-Roman “survey” style tradition associated with Seleucid-era exploration and embassy reporting, including routes leading to Palibotta/Palibothra.
In the 2nd century CE, Arrian composed his own Indica and drew on earlier authorities (including Megasthenes through the tradition of fragments), further stabilizing Megasthenes’ status as the principal Greek witness to early Mauryan India.
After defeating Antigonus at Ipsus, Seleucus I Nicator consolidated control of large parts of Asia, setting the stage for renewed engagement with the far-eastern satrapies formerly held by Alexander’s successors and now contested with emerging Mauryan power.
