In Miletus, Aristagoras renounced his position as tyrant and promoted a new (non-tyrannical) civic order, while encouraging other Ionian cities to expel their tyrants—transforming elite intrigue into a region-wide rebellion against Achaemenid rule.
Seeking mainland Greek help, Aristagoras failed to win Spartan support, but secured naval aid from Athens (20 triremes) and Eretria (5 triremes), internationalizing the conflict.
