Mani (founder of Manichaeism) is born in the region of Seleucia-Ctesiphon in Mesopotamia, later within the Sasanian sphere; his origins in this milieu shaped the movement’s early ability to operate in the empire’s Aramaic- and Iranian-speaking worlds.
Manichaean biographical tradition (as reflected in the Cologne Mani Codex) places an early revelatory experience in Mani’s youth, involving a guiding spiritual companion (“twin,” syzygos), a key element in later Manichaean authority-claims.
Manichaean and later historical traditions connect the start of Mani’s public preaching with the early 240s, often linking it to Shapur I’s early reign; this marks the movement’s transition from private revelation to organized missionary activity in Sasanian territory.
Shapur I’s rule (commonly dated 240–270) created the political framework in which Mani could seek royal protection and communicate with a multi-religious elite at court; later sources consistently associate Shapur’s reign with relative openness toward minority religions.
By the early 240s Mani is reported to have secured access to Shapur I’s court, a decisive step that enabled Manichaeism to present itself as a universal, literate religion compatible with imperial patronage and elite networks.
Mani composes the Šābuhragān (“Dedicated to Shapur”), a systematic Middle Persian presentation of Manichaean teaching associated with his effort to address Shapur I and the Sasanian ruling environment in an Iranian language register.
During Shapur I’s reign, Mani is described as traveling widely and organizing communities, using imperial access and mobility to expand Manichaean teaching across regions under Sasanian influence and along frontier-connected routes.
The Zoroastrian priest Kartir appears in Shapur I’s trilingual inscription at the Kaʿba-ye Zartosht (often dated to the early 260s), signaling the growing visibility of clerical authority that would later be mobilized against Mani and his followers.
Shapur I dies in 270, closing the long reign under which Mani had been able to operate with notable protection and court access; subsequent successions proved far less favorable for Manichaeism.
Hormizd I succeeds Shapur I and reigns only about a year (270–271); sources associate this short reign with continued (or at least not yet reversed) space for Mani and Manichaeans before a sharper policy shift under Bahrām I.
With Bahrām I’s accession (commonly placed in 271), the influence of Kartir and pro-clerical politics is linked to the reversal of earlier tolerance; Mani is arrested and dies in custody after a period of imprisonment remembered in Manichaean tradition.
Mani’s death occurred after imprisonment (traditionally 26 days); modern scholarship disputes the exact year, with leading reconstructions clustering around 274 (e.g., 2 March 274) or 277 (e.g., 26 February 277), reflecting uncertainties in early Sasanian chronology and later colophon evidence.
After Mani’s death, Kartir and allied Zoroastrian elites are associated with intensified pressure on religious minorities, using persecution to consolidate a more explicitly Zoroastrian state order within the Sasanian realm.
