Emperor Augustus died at Nola, ending the founding reign of the Principate. His adopted son and stepson Tiberius became emperor, marking the start of the Julio-Claudian dynasty’s imperial phase (14–68 CE).
Germanicus—Tiberius’s adopted son and a hugely popular commander—died at Antioch, removing a prominent potential successor and deepening political suspicion and factional tensions at Rome.
Sejanus, the powerful Praetorian Prefect under Tiberius, was denounced by imperial letter, arrested at a Senate meeting, and executed. His fall triggered wider purges and reshaped power dynamics between the emperor, Senate, and Praetorian Guard.
Tiberius died at Misenum, ending a 23-year reign. Caligula (Gaius) became emperor soon after, ushering in a brief and turbulent transition within the Julio-Claudian house.
Caligula was killed by members of the Praetorian Guard and other conspirators, abruptly ending his reign and creating an immediate succession crisis in the capital.
Following Caligula’s assassination, Claudius—Caligula’s uncle—emerged as emperor with decisive support from the Praetorian Guard, stabilizing the regime after the shock of palace violence.
Under Claudius, Rome launched the invasion and conquest of Britain (beginning in 43 CE), a major expansion that became a lasting part of imperial identity and military prestige.
Claudius died on 13 October 54. His death enabled Nero—his adopted son—to become emperor, continuing Julio-Claudian rule into a period marked by court politics, cultural display, and rising instability.
The uprising led by Boudica (c. 60–61 CE) culminated in the Battle of Watling Street (61 CE), where Roman forces defeated the Britons. The outcome helped secure Roman control in southern Britain for centuries.
A catastrophic fire broke out in Rome in July 64 and burned for days, devastating large parts of the city. In its aftermath, Nero’s response and rebuilding efforts became central to his contested legacy, alongside reports of scapegoating Christians.
A major senatorial and military plot to assassinate Nero and replace him with Gaius Calpurnius Piso was exposed in 65 CE. The crackdown intensified political fear and removed prominent figures, deepening elite alienation from Nero’s rule.
In 66 CE, a large-scale rebellion against Roman rule erupted in Judaea, escalating into a major imperial war. Nero dispatched Vespasian to suppress the revolt, a decision that had long-term consequences for imperial politics.
Declared a public enemy by the Senate, Nero took his own life on 9 June 68. His death ended Julio-Claudian rule and opened the succession struggle later known as the Year of the Four Emperors.
