In spring 255 BCE, Carthage (with the commander Xanthippus in the traditional account) decisively defeated Regulus near the Bagradas (Medjerda), capturing Regulus and forcing Rome to abandon hopes of a quick victory in Africa.
Rome’s victory at Panormus captured or neutralized much of Carthage’s elephant force on Sicily, reducing Carthaginian willingness to fight pitched land battles and pushing the conflict toward sieges and naval logistics.
At Drepana, Carthage won its greatest naval victory of the war, severely damaging Rome’s fleet and demonstrating that Roman sea power—while improving—remained vulnerable to tactical and operational missteps.
Later in 249 BCE, Roman naval forces suffered further catastrophe near Phintias, where storm damage after Carthaginian interception destroyed much of the Roman fleet, delaying large-scale Roman naval operations for years.
After the Aegates defeat, Carthage accepted peace terms commonly known as the Treaty of Lutatius, ending the war and initiating Rome’s first major overseas provincial expansion in Sicily (with significant indemnity obligations imposed on Carthage).
A newly financed and rebuilt Roman fleet defeated Carthage at the Aegates Islands on 10 March 241 BCE, cutting Carthaginian supply lines and compelling Carthage to seek peace.
