In the early Ming, literati taste and court standards could be skeptical of blue-and-white and other vividly colored wares. Such critiques help explain why imperial preference for blue-and-white fluctuated before later fifteenth-century revival and standardization at Jingdezhen.
Historical records described the Jingdezhen institution as initially called a “Pottery Factory,” later renamed the “Imperial Porcelain Factory” during the Jianwen reign—an administrative step reflecting expanded court organization and demand for regulated output.
By the early 15th century, Jingdezhen had grown into a major state-run manufacturing center; sources describe twelve imperial kilns at Jingdezhen by 1402, supporting large-scale, specialized production for the court.
During the Yongle reign, the court closely controlled design, production, and distribution of imperial wares, using fine Jingdezhen porcelains for court needs and as high-status diplomatic gifts—an important driver of stylistic refinement and quality standards.
The Xuande period is widely regarded as a high point for Ming blue-and-white at Jingdezhen, with refined forms, painting, and firing. Museum collections document Xuande-marked Jingdezhen blue-and-white as canonical for later connoisseurship.
Scientific study of Jingdezhen sherds addresses the role of imported Middle Eastern cobalt (often discussed as “Sumali blue”) versus domestic sources, highlighting how pigment supply and recipes shaped the look of elite blue-and-white production.
A recorded palace order in 1433 for 443,500 pieces (with dragon and phoenix designs) illustrates the imperial kiln system’s capacity for enormous, standardized production—central to Ming court culture and redistribution via gifts and regional princely courts.
The doucai method—combining underglaze blue outlines with overglaze enamel colors—appeared by the Xuande reign and later became a key court style. It expanded Jingdezhen’s technical repertoire beyond monochrome and pure underglaze blue-and-white.

In the Jiajing period, Jingdezhen imperial kilns advanced wucai (“five-color”) decoration—pairing underglaze cobalt outlines with overglaze enamels—broadening color-driven court aesthetics while retaining blue-and-white as a structural design element.
Late Ming demand abroad helped drive Jingdezhen’s panel-decorated blue-and-white export wares known as kraak porcelain, produced mainly during the Wanli reign and continuing into the Tianqi and Chongzhen reigns—among the first Chinese porcelains to reach Europe in large quantities.
As Ming finances and stability deteriorated, the court reduced support for official Jingdezhen kilns (often framed as beginning around 1620). Producers increasingly relied on other markets, encouraging freer painting styles and experimentation associated with “transitional” wares.
The Ming dynasty ended in 1644, bringing severe political and military disruption. The collapse of central patronage and wartime instability marked a decisive break for the Ming imperial kiln regime at Jingdezhen, even as production continued for other markets.
