Scholar-official Xu Guangqi (Paul Xu) was baptized in 1603, becoming one of the most influential early Chinese Catholic converts and a key collaborator in Sino-European scientific translation and exchange.
Ricci published The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven (Tianzhu shiyi), a foundational work of late-Ming Catholic apologetics written in a style designed to persuade Confucian-educated readers and to present Christian theism as compatible with select classical concepts.
