Malacca’s ruler Parameswara traveled to China with Zheng He’s fleet; Yongle confirmed him as ruler and bestowed symbolic gifts (e.g., seal and court-issued insignia), strengthening Malacca’s position within the Ming tribute-and-trade framework.
The treasure fleet returned to Nanjing with notable captives and foreign envoys, reinforcing the court’s model of bringing tribute missions to China under the umbrella of state-managed maritime contact.
The Yongle court issued orders for the fourth treasure voyage, continuing the pattern of state-directed missions that linked maritime diplomacy, controlled exchange, and the circulation of tribute envoys.
The fourth voyage departed and extended to Hormuz on the Persian Gulf, demonstrating the Yongle court’s ambition to connect with major transshipment hubs where merchants from multiple regions converged.
On New Year’s Day 1421, Beijing formally became the national capital. The shift reflected strategic priorities increasingly oriented toward northern frontiers, even as maritime tribute missions continued to shape foreign relations and prestige.
Yongle ordered the sixth voyage and issued gifts for returning envoys from multiple countries, but later in the same year he also ordered a suspension of the treasure voyages—signaling rising constraints despite the continuing diplomatic schedule.
Late in Yongle’s reign, Zheng He was dispatched to Palembang to confer court gifts and recognition on Shi Jinqing’s successor, illustrating how the court used formal investiture to stabilize strategic ports linked to tribute and trade.
The Yongle Emperor died in 1424, marking the close of the reign most closely associated with the large-scale maritime tribute missions (including Zheng He’s early voyages) and their intensive state investment.
