Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed the Ming dynasty and took Dadu (Beijing), prompting the Yuan court’s flight to the steppe and setting up a long northern frontier contest with Mongol successor polities (often termed the Northern Yuan).

Esen Taishi led a major Oirat offensive in 1449; the Ming emperor Yingzong personally took the field and was captured after the Ming force was destroyed near Tumu Fortress. The defeat became a turning point in Ming frontier policy and politics.
The Ming organized frontier defense into major commands (commonly known as the Nine Garrisons/Nine Defense Areas) distributed along key corridors from the northeast to the northwest, institutionalizing garrison-based defense and rapid response to raids.
After about a year in Oirat hands, the captured emperor Yingzong was released and returned to China, where he was kept under tight control while the Jingtai emperor ruled—highlighting how frontier warfare reshaped internal Ming power struggles.
From the mid-15th century into the early 16th, frontier pressure helped drive a shift from reliance on forts and beacon networks toward more extensive wall-building; scholarship identifies a first construction climax beginning in the Chenghua era, with intensified work in key frontier commands.
