The detailed sheet known as "Squirrels in a Plane Tree" (Abu’l Hasan with Mansur) exemplifies Jahangir-era naturalism and close observation. Such nature studies circulated in albums alongside portraits, reinforcing the period’s taste for lifelike depiction.
Jahangir marries Mehr al-Nesaʾ (later titled Nur Jahan). Her rapid rise—along with her family’s prominence at court—affects cultural patronage and courtly self-fashioning, helping to frame portraiture and luxury arts as tools of dynastic and factional representation.

Abu’l Hasan’s sensitive portrait of an ascetic (dated 1618) exemplifies Jahangir’s taste for psychologically and spiritually resonant figures, rendered with heightened naturalism. Such works expand the portrait genre beyond emperors and nobles to types valued by the court.
