Akbar opened a major campaign against Mewar by investing the Sisodia stronghold of Chittorgarh, a key Rajput fortress in southern Rajputana. The siege marked a decisive escalation from diplomacy toward coercive incorporation of resistant Rajput polities.
Mughal forces captured Chittorgarh after several months of siege operations. The fall of Chittor became a turning point in Mughal pressure on Rajputana, demonstrating imperial siegecraft and signaling severe consequences for continued Sisodia resistance.
A victory letter (fathnama) announcing Chittor’s capture was issued on 9 March 1568 (10 Ramadan 975 AH). Such proclamations helped frame the campaign’s legitimacy and broadcast imperial success to provincial officers.
Akbar shifted pressure onto other major Rajput forts by besieging Ranthambore, a formidable stronghold linked to Rajput power in the region. The operation extended Mughal control corridors in eastern Rajasthan.
Rao Surjan Hada submitted and handed over Ranthambore. Its surrender further weakened coordinated Rajput resistance by removing a major fortified refuge and showcased Akbar’s blend of intimidation and negotiated submission.
During the Ranthambore operations, Akbar ordered action against Kalinjar; the fort’s ruler surrendered later in 1569. The relatively swift submission reflected the deterrent effect of Chittor and Ranthambore on other frontier and Rajput-linked fortresses.
Kalyan Mal of Bikaner is recorded as acknowledging Mughal suzerainty at Nagaur (often linked to the wider pattern of Rajput incorporation through submission and service). Bikaner’s alignment strengthened Mughal logistics and manpower in Rajputana campaigns.
Mewar forces under Maharana Pratap fought Mughal-led forces under Man Singh I of Amber at Haldighati. The battle was pivotal to Akbar’s Rajputana policy: it relied heavily on Rajput commanders serving the empire while targeting the remaining major holdout, Mewar.
After sustained pressure following Haldighati, Mughal forces under Shahbaz Khan (with prominent Rajput allies in the imperial army) took Kumbhalgarh, a key Mewar stronghold. The capture further narrowed Maharana Pratap’s secure bases and expanded Mughal outposts in southern Rajasthan.
Rao Chandrasen Rathore—remembered for prolonged hostility to Mughal expansion in Marwar—died in 1581. His death removed a significant center of Rajput resistance, enabling tighter imperial control in western Rajasthan.
Following a period of direct Mughal administration after Chandrasen’s death, Akbar restored the Marwar throne to Udai Singh in 1583. Restoration under imperial auspices exemplified the incorporation model: local dynasties retained status while accepting Mughal suzerainty and service obligations.
After Udai Singh’s death, Sur Singh succeeded in Marwar and is described as receiving tilak from Akbar (a ceremonial confirmation), alongside a mansab grant. Such court-sanctioned successions reinforced Rajput integration into Mughal political-military hierarchy.
Akbar’s death in late October 1605 ended the reign in which Mughal–Rajput relations were most systematically reshaped through a mix of conquest, negotiated submission, and recruitment of Rajput elites into the mansabdari system. His successor Jahangir inherited both the alliances and unresolved conflicts (notably with Mewar).
