The laying of the foundations of Akbarnagar at Rajmahal under Man Singh marked an administrative-capital initiative within Bengal Subah, illustrating how provincial capitals could be re-sited to improve oversight and revenue/military coordination in a large, wealthy province.
As Mughal power expanded into the Deccan, Berar was organized as a subah (province), extending the standardized provincial template beyond North India and tying Deccan revenues and military resources more directly to the imperial center.
Following the Mughal annexation of Khandesh (with key forts such as Asirgarh and the administrative center at Burhanpur), the region was incorporated into the imperial provincial system as a subah, strengthening Mughal logistical and military depth in the northern Deccan.

During Shah Jahan’s reign, Talangana was separated from Berar and treated as a distinct subah, demonstrating the empire’s willingness to subdivide provinces when conquest, fiscal potential, or security conditions made existing units too large or unwieldy.
Aurangzeb’s successful siege of Bidar brought the city/fort into the Mughal sphere, an episode tied to the broader Deccan wars that reshaped provincial jurisdictions and strengthened the empire’s capacity to administer newly contested territories.
The Mughal conquest of Bijapur (ending the Adil Shahi dynasty’s rule) enabled the creation/confirmation of Bijapur as a Mughal provincial unit, expanding the subah system deeper into the Deccan and increasing the administrative burden on imperial military-fiscal structures.
After Golconda’s fall, Aurangzeb annexed the Qutb Shahi realm and organized it as Hyderabad (Golconda) Subah, extending Mughal provincial government over a major revenue and strategic region of the eastern Deccan.
Aurangzeb’s death marked the end of the period’s terminal date and a major political rupture: succession conflict and shifting power balances accelerated pressures on provincial government, as subah-level commanders and revenue officials became increasingly pivotal in sustaining (or contesting) imperial authority.
