Mehmed II began rebuilding and repopulating the city by encouraging voluntary migration and using sürgün (state-directed/forced resettlement) to bring Muslims, Christians, and Jews from across the empire—an early driver of Istanbul’s post-1453 urban growth and social recomposition.

The 1509 Constantinople earthquake (“Minor Judgment Day”) caused extensive destruction, including widespread building collapse and damage to major structures, prompting reconstruction measures and influencing building practices—an abrupt shock to the city’s built environment amid ongoing growth.
The Kırkçeşme (Forty Fountains) waterway system was built/expanded in the mid-16th century (associated with Mimar Sinan under Süleiman) to bring water from the Belgrade Forest area to Istanbul. The project responded to rising population and chronic water shortages, supporting further urban expansion.
The Mağlova Aqueduct, one of the major Kırkçeşme structures, was constructed by Sinan (mid-1550s to early 1560s). Its scale and engineering helped stabilize Istanbul’s water supply as the city’s neighborhoods and populations continued to grow.
A massive fire beginning 24 July 1660 destroyed large portions of Istanbul, with severe losses in densely built wooden neighborhoods. The disaster accelerated major rebuilding and state interventions in urban space, affecting where communities—especially non-Muslim groups—could rebuild and reside.
Reconstruction after the 1660 fire helped clear and reconfigure the Eminönü area for the completion of the New Mosque (Yeni Cami) complex, which opened in 1665. The rebuilding reshaped land use and contributed to shifts in the residential geography of non-Muslim communities near the commercial waterfront.
