Amid growing foreign incursions and the limits of the earlier feitoria model, Portugal pivoted toward systematic settlement and agricultural colonization—setting the stage for plantation agriculture, including sugar, to expand rapidly along Brazil’s Atlantic coast.
King João III created hereditary captaincies to delegate colonization, defense, and economic development to donatários. The new administrative framework enabled large land grants and investment conditions that favored plantation-scale sugar production.
One of the earliest large-scale sugar facilities in Portuguese America, Engenho dos Erasmos (São Vicente/Santos region) was constructed around 1534. Such mills provided an early model for the engenho complex later scaled dramatically in northeastern Brazil.

By about 1570, sugar—especially from Pernambuco—had risen to rival brazilwood in profitability, reflecting the consolidation of export-oriented plantation agriculture and the growth of mill infrastructure and merchant finance around sugar shipments.
From the early 1600s Palmares formed as a major maroon polity in the Serra da Barriga region, sustained in part by runaways from plantation zones. Its longevity illustrates the persistent resistance generated by the coercive labor regime underpinning sugar expansion.
The Dutch West India Company devised the Groot Desseyn (Grand Design) to seize key Iberian Atlantic possessions, aiming to control both Brazilian sugar regions and African slaving ports—an explicit recognition of sugar’s dependence on transatlantic coercive labor supply.
Dutch WIC forces captured Salvador (Bahia) in May 1624, seeking a commercial and naval base and leverage over sugar-producing regions. The episode underscored how sugar wealth made northeastern Brazil a strategic target in Atlantic warfare.
In February–March 1630 the Dutch captured Olinda and Recife, anchoring control in Pernambuco—then the richest sugar-producing area. This occupation reshaped plantation finance, shipping, and wartime competition for sugar revenues.
John Maurice (Johan Maurits) of Nassau-Siegen served as governor (1636–1644), consolidating Dutch rule and pursuing measures to stabilize the plantation economy, including policies to keep Portuguese planters productive and to secure enslaved labor supplies via Atlantic expansion.

On 1654-01-26 Dutch authorities signed the capitulation of Recife (Treaty of Taborda), agreeing to abandon possessions in Brazil. The surrender marked the effective end of Dutch political control over the sugar zone, though evacuations continued afterward.
The 1661 Treaty of The Hague formally recognized Portuguese sovereignty over Dutch Brazil (New Holland) in exchange for an indemnity—closing the interstate dispute and stabilizing Atlantic trade conditions for the restored Portuguese-controlled sugar economy.
In January 1694 the main settlement of Palmares (Macaco/Cerca do Macaco) fell to an expedition involving Portuguese forces and allies, undermining the largest maroon state in the region and reinforcing plantation labor control on the sugar frontier.
Zumbi, Palmares’ last major leader, was captured and killed on 1695-11-20. His death symbolized the suppression of a major center of resistance tied to the plantation-slavery system that powered the transatlantic sugar economy.
