A large-scale, multi-province uprising associated with White Lotus-derived religious networks erupted and became the central internal crisis of early Jiaqing rule. The conflict strained Qing finances and exposed deep governance and military problems.
The Qianlong Emperor abdicated and named his son Yongyan as successor, who assumed the reign title Jiaqing. Despite the succession, Qianlong retained substantial authority as emperor emeritus, shaping early Jiaqing-era court politics.
With the death of the Qianlong Emperor, Jiaqing was able to assert real authority and move against entrenched court corruption that had flourished under Qianlong’s continued influence after abdication.
Shortly after Qianlong’s death, Jiaqing ordered the arrest of Heshen, the late emperor’s powerful favorite, signaling a decisive attempt to curb corruption and reassert imperial control over the central administration.
After investigation and sentencing, Heshen was compelled to take his own life; his downfall became a defining early moment of Jiaqing’s reign and an emblem of the court’s effort to address systemic graft.
Amid growing foreign-linked opium inflows, Jiaqing issued a prohibition targeting purchases of opium from Western merchants—an early step in a longer, uneven Qing struggle to suppress the trade.
After years of costly counterinsurgency, Qing forces and local militias brought the White Lotus Rebellion largely under control. The campaign’s expense and corruption damaged state capacity and contributed to longer-term Qing weakening.
Jiaqing’s government formally prohibited opium use, reflecting escalating concern that consumption and smuggling were spreading within official and elite circles and undermining fiscal and social order.
Sectarian rebels associated with the Tianli (Heavenly Principle) sect launched a dramatic assault in Beijing and penetrated the Forbidden City area. The attack shocked the court and underscored the persistence of millenarian and anti-Qing mobilization after White Lotus-era upheavals.
Qing forces completed the suppression of remaining Eight Trigrams resistance after the 1813 palace attack, ending a major internal security crisis that had threatened the capital and exposed vulnerabilities in court and guard systems.
Britain’s second embassy to Qing China, led by Lord Amherst, failed amid disputes over diplomatic ritual (including the kowtow issue). Amherst never received an audience with the Jiaqing Emperor and the mission was expelled from Beijing, worsening diplomatic friction.
Jiaqing died while the court was in summer quarters at Rehe (Jehol, present-day Chengde), ending a reign marked by anti-corruption initiatives, persistent internal unrest, and mounting pressure from the opium economy.
A printed edict dated the day of Jiaqing’s death served as his final testament and formally announced the succession, providing an official capstone to the reign and a transition document for the next emperor.
